But here's what I've learned watching organizations deploy AI in the real world: the technology is rarely the bottleneck anymore.

Three human challenges consistently derail AI initiatives:
- Workforce resistance and capability — Employees fear the “replacement” narrative. When they can't see how AI augments their work, it amplifies fear and stalls adoption.
- Innovation without structure — Experimentation without guardrails produces expensive chaos. Without clear business problem definition and accountable ownership, projects drift.
- Data readiness — Not just quality, but availability and accessibility. Without proper data hygiene, AI will struggle. Garbage in, garbage out.
None of these are technology problems. They're coordination problems. People problems.

We've solved enough of the hard technical problems. What we haven't solved is the human coordination layer—and it extends far beyond your own organization.

The Uncomfortable Truth
We've solved the hard technical problems faster than we've solved the human ones.
We can train models in hours. We cannot train procurement departments in hours.
We can automate decisions at scale. We cannot automate the committee that needs to approve those automations.
We can deploy globally with a single click. We cannot get a single signature from legal in under six weeks.
What This Means for AI Leaders
If you're leading AI initiatives, stop asking “Is our AI ready?”
Start asking:
- How many external dependencies require human approval?
- What's our longest compliance review cycle?
- Which stakeholders outside our organization have implicit veto power?
- Where are we assuming coordination that doesn't yet exist?
The MIT research found something crucial: purchasing AI tools from specialized vendors succeeds about 67% of the time, while internal builds succeed only one-third as often.20 The winners aren't those with the best models—they're the ones who started the human work early.
The Path Forward
This isn't a complaint about bureaucracy. These processes exist for good reasons—protecting patients, ensuring security, maintaining accountability.
But we need to be honest about where the real work is.
The next wave of AI adoption won't be unlocked by better algorithms. It'll be unlocked by better coordination, clearer regulatory frameworks, and organizations that treat human alignment as seriously as they treat model alignment.
The bottleneck was never the machine. It was always us.
